Step-by-Step Guide to My Preparation

1. Building a Strong Foundation with Exam Objectives

The Exam Preparation Guide became my roadmap. The objectives are comprehensive, spanning areas such as:

  • Conceptual, logical, and physical design.
  • Lifecycle management and workload domain optimization.
  • Security, availability, and disaster recovery strategies.

2. Tackling Conceptual, Logical, and Physical Design

Understanding the distinction between these design types was critical for aligning IT solutions with business needs:

  • Conceptual Design: Broadly defines the "what" (e.g., high availability and disaster recovery requirements).
  • Logical Design: Maps these requirements into technology components like NSX or vSAN.
  • Physical Design: Finalizes the "how," detailing hardware specifications and network configurations.

In practice, these frameworks helped me transition customer needs into implementable VCF solutions that deliver tangible business value.

3. Real-World Application of Design Principles

The certification emphasizes the AMPRS model (Availability, Manageability, Performance, Recoverability, Security). For instance:

  • In a multi-region deployment, understanding trade-offs between availability and performance is key.
  • Crafting a disaster recovery plan involves aligning Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) with business impact analyses.

I applied these principles using VMware’s Hands-On Labs (HOL) and by revisiting prior deployment projects for practical learning.

4. Emphasizing Lifecycle Management

VCF’s lifecycle management capabilities simplify platform upgrades, patching, and expansion. During preparation, I simulated scenarios where efficient lifecycle management minimized downtime, particularly in large-scale environments with interdependent workloads.

The VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator Plug-In for VMware Live Site Recovery provides administrators with a robust workflow automation platform. This plug-in enables users to build custom workflows for VMware Live Site Recovery using the intuitive drag-and-drop workflow editor in VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator. It leverages prebuilt workflows to simplify the process of managing VMware Live Site Recovery infrastructure and APIs, making disaster recovery operations more efficient and scalable.

  1. Download the VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator application file for VMware Live Site Recovery.

  3. Configure the connection between your VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator instance and the vCenter Server instance on your VMware Live Site Recovery site.

Workflow Configuration

Before running workflows, configure the plug-in with your Site Recovery Manager by executing the following:

  • Configure Local Sites

  • Configure Remote Site

  • Login Remote Site (Note: This step is required for each session to maintain access.)


Example Workflows

The plug-in includes a variety of prebuilt workflows that highlight its automation capabilities:

1. Create VM and Protect It

  • Automates the creation of a virtual machine.

  • Adds the VM to an existing protection group.

2. Create Protection Group for Array-Based Replication

  • Creates an array-based protection group.

  • Protects virtual machines by adding their datastore to the protection group.

  • Adds the protection group to an existing recovery plan.


Caveats and Known Issues

While the plug-in significantly enhances VMware Live Site Recovery management, there are some known limitations:

  • Certificate Changes: If the VMware Live Site Recovery certificate changes, the site may no longer be visible in the VMware Aria Automation Orchestrator inventory. Reconfigure the site using the "Configure Local Sites" workflow.

  • Limited Workflow Actions Without Protection Sites: Certain actions, such as creating recovery plans or modifying VM recovery settings, cannot be performed if the protection site is unavailable. Use the VMware Live Site Recovery UI as an alternative.

  • vCenter Server Plug-In Registration Error: Users might encounter a vmodl mismatch error when registering a new vCenter Server instance. The workaround involves downloading the latest vCenter Server plug-in from the marketplace.
